Virar might be at the far end of the Western Railway Suburban Line, about one hour and 20 minutes away from Churchgate station but it is still a popular residential area with a good mix of Maharashtrian and Catholic and the native fisher folk population.Trains are the fastest means to transport to reach Virar. The suburb has no BEST service, but this lack is compensated by State Transport (ST) buses available at a five-minute distance from the station. The fare ranges from five to eight rupees. Unlike in the rest of Mumbai, autos plying in the suburb do not operate on the meter system but on per seat basis. While a seat to Agashi is Rs 6, one to Arnala costs Rs 10 and Rs 4 to go to Bolinj.

Virar may not boast of big malls, but has many shops like Thakur Arcade and MG Shopping Center in and around the station area and Shreepal Shopping Center in Agashi that provide with basic necessities. Viva Supermarket in Thakur Arcade is one of the few outlets offering branded goods.

For the foodies, the area has no five star hotels. But the Monginis Cake shop and restaurants like Trupti, Shreya Ambika and Flora that serve South Indian fare and fast food are a hit among the locals.

As for entertainment, Woodlands theatre is situated close to the station. The suburb is soon to get a multiplex called Viva Melange. But the main attraction of Virar lies in its historic temples. The 400-year-old Agashi Jain Temple and the Jivadani Temple in Virar East are the highlights of this area. Picnic spots include Arnala beach, Swagat and KT resorts are popular even among non-Virar residents. Virar has great recreation places like Science Garden.

Hospitals & Medicals Facilities

Virar residents need not worry about medical facilities. There are a number of hospitals like Sanjivani Hospital, Ashwini Hospital, Desai Maternity Hospital and Joshi Children hospital close to the station. Agashi has the reputed Dalvi Hospital. Though there are medical stores located next to the hospitals, Sanjivani medical store is the only day and night chemist in Virar West, while Dipti Chemist is open round-the-clock in Virar East.
